Comparing Medicare Supplement plans from the companies we represent

Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield UnitedHealthcare Humana Mutual of Omaha

We do not offer every plan available in your area. Any information we provide is limited to the plans we do offer.

The part that actually decides it

Same coverage. Very different prices.

Every company has to sell the identical standardized Plan G. What they don't have to match is the price — and in California the spread between the cheapest and most expensive company can run hundreds of dollars a year for coverage that is identical by law.

  • Every company we represent, side by side.
  • Household discounts applied where you qualify.
  • No health questions on this step.

The one thing most people are never told

Every Plan G covers exactly the same things.

So the only question worth asking is whether you're paying the lowest price for it.

Paying too much

Plan G at the wrong company

  • Same coverage as everyone else's Plan G
  • Higher monthly premium
  • A rate-increase history you were never shown
  • Not one extra dollar of benefit for it
vs
Same plan, less money

Plan G at the lowest-priced company

  • Identical coverage — standardized by law
  • Any doctor in the country who takes Medicare
  • Sorted by price, never by commission
  • We find it for you, free

In one California county we recently checked, the cheapest and most expensive Plan G quotes for the same 65-year-old were about $425 a year apart — for coverage that is identical by law. Which company is lowest changes with your age and ZIP.

Side-by-side comparison

Plan G or Plan N — what's the difference?

Plan N usually costs less each month. Here is exactly what you give up for it, so you can decide for yourself.

FeaturePlan GPlan N
Medicare Part B deductible Not covered Not covered
Part B coinsurance Covered after the Part B deductible Covered after the Part B deductible, except for certain office and emergency-room copays
Office-visit copays No Plan N-style office copay Up to $20 for some office visits
Emergency-room copays No Plan N-style ER copay Up to $50 when the visit does not result in an inpatient admission
Part B excess charges Covered Not covered
Part A hospital deductible and coinsurance Covered Covered
Skilled nursing facility coinsurance Covered Covered
Foreign travel emergency benefit 80% up to plan limits 80% up to plan limits
Monthly premium Often higher, but pricing varies by company and applicant Often lower, but pricing varies by company and applicant

Plan benefits are standardized, but premiums, rate-increase history, household discounts, underwriting, and availability vary by insurance company and applicant. This section is educational and is not a guarantee of eligibility, price, or coverage.

The practical tradeoff

When might each plan make sense?

Neither plan is automatically better. It usually comes down to the actual premium difference and how much predictability you want.

Plan G may fit when…

You want fewer surprises

  • You prefer fewer surprise out-of-pocket costs.
  • You do not want exposure to Part B excess charges.
  • You see specialists often, or travel outside California for care.
  • You are comfortable paying more monthly for broader coverage.
Plan N may fit when…

The savings outweigh the copays

  • The premium savings are meaningful enough to you.
  • You are comfortable with certain office and ER copays.
  • Your regular doctors accept Medicare assignment.
  • You understand Plan N does not cover Part B excess charges.
Worth knowing in California

Part B excess charges are legal here

Eight states ban providers from billing above the Medicare-approved amount. California is not one of them, so a provider who does not accept Medicare assignment can bill up to 15% more. Plan G covers that. Plan N does not.

The birthday rule runs one direction

Plan G to Plan N is easy. Back is not.

California's birthday rule lets you switch to a plan with equal or lesser benefits without health questions. Plan N is lesser than Plan G — so moving down is simple, and moving back up usually means answering health questions.

🎂

The California Birthday Rule — your yearly right to switch

California law gives every Medicare Supplement holder a 60-day window each year, starting on your birthday, to switch to an equal or lesser plan with any company — with no health questions asked. If you've been putting off shopping because you worried about being turned down, this is the window that removes that worry.

Applies to current Medigap policyholders switching to same-or-lesser benefits. You must apply within your 60-day window — we recommend starting about 30 days before your birthday.

Where are you today?

Two simple starting points.

New to Medicare

Turning 65 soon?

This is the one window where no company can turn you down or charge you more because of your health. It's the best chance you'll ever have to lock in Plan G at the right price. Get it right the first time.

Straight answers

Questions people ask first.

Is a cheaper Plan G really the same coverage?
Yes. Medicare Supplement plans are standardized by law, so every company's Plan G covers the exact same things. The only real differences are the monthly premium and how fast a company raises it. Paying more gets you nothing extra.
Am I talking to a real person?
When you request a callback, an automated assistant may reach you first to collect your basic details. It will tell you it's automated. You can ask for a person at any point, and a licensed California agent handles every quote and every enrollment.
Are you Medicare, or the government?
No. We are a private, independent, licensed insurance agency. We are not Medicare and not the government. We help you compare private Medicare Supplement plans and choose the one that fits.
Can I keep my own doctor?
With any Medicare Supplement plan you can see any doctor or hospital in the country that accepts Medicare — no networks and no referrals. That's one of the biggest differences from Medicare Advantage.
Will I have to answer health questions?
It depends on timing. During your one-time six-month Medigap open enrollment period that starts when your Part B begins, and in certain guaranteed-issue situations, companies cannot use health questions to decline you. Outside those windows they usually can. Getting a quote never requires health questions.
What is the California Birthday Rule?
If you already have a Medicare Supplement plan, California law gives you 60 days each year, starting on your birthday, to switch to an equal or lesser plan with no health questions. It's a yearly chance to move to a lower price without being turned down for your health.
What does this cost me?
Nothing. Talking to us is free, with no obligation. You only ever pay your plan's premium to the insurance company — never a fee to us.
